tomjm Christopher, I am signed up to volunteer at the Cloisters once the pandemic is over. Thanks for doing this project. I love it. Are there copies of the words in English for these hymns?

about

This is an album comprised of a cappella hymns written by the residents of the Ephrata Cloister, an eighteenth-century celibate community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Some of the music is by the solitary sisters of Ephrata, who are the earliest known female composers in America. This is the first time this music has been performed by a professional ensemble, and it was recorded in the room for which the music was originally written.

CHRISTOPHER DYLAN HERBERT is a musicologist and baritone who
performs frequently throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. He is a two-time GRAMMY® nominee. He has soloed with The San Francisco Symphony, Boston Symphony, and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, performed with International Contemporary Ensemble and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, and he regularly presents Winterize – an outdoor adaptation of Winterreise with transistor radios. He frequently develops new opera and concert works, including commissions by Hannah Lash, Gregory Spears, Laura Kaminsky, and Ellen Reid. Dr. Herbert holds a B.A. in Music from Yale University, an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University, and a D.M.A. in Voice from The Juilliard School. He is the head of the voice program at William Paterson University in New Jersey. His current research focuses on the music of the
eighteenth-century Ephrata Cloister in Pennsylvania. He was the baritone in the critically acclaimed ensemble New York Polyphony from 2010 to 2020.

THIS ALBUM WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY
WITHOUT THE FOUR SINGERS WHO CREATED IT.
They are Elizabeth Bates, Clifton Massey, Nils Neubert, and Steven Hrycelak (with whom I have been making music since I was a freshman in college). Joseph Greey is a focused, precise, and dedicated engineer, and I am delighted he agreed to give his time to record this beautiful album. I thank Andrew Bove for his work in mastering the recording. I also thank Louis Levitt and Bright Shiny Things for finding potential in my project and for seeing it to fruition. I give special thanks to Jeff Bach, who is a brilliant research partner. I also want to thank Jeff and our colleague Hedwig Durnbaugh, who produced the translations of the texts on this album. Translating seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Pietist German is not an easy task, and I am extremely grateful to Jeff and Hedda for their
expertise. Thank you to Anthony Petruccello and David Fuchs, who transcribed some of the music on this album. And I wish to thank Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Bertheaud, Kerry Mohn, and everyone else who works and volunteers at the Ephrata Cloister. They gave their time in March 2019 so that I could bring a bunch of eccentric artists into a historical site in order to create not only an album, but also a promotional video. If you are reading this, please visit the Ephrata Cloister.
